If you notice a small leak from a tap, toilet, or appliance, you can often stop the water while you wait for repairs by isolating the supply. Here’s how to do it safely:
1. Locate the isolation valve Most taps, toilets, and appliances have a small valve on the pipe feeding them. It’s usually under the sink, behind the toilet, or near the appliance.
2. Turn the valve off
Most isolation valves can be operated with a flat‑head screwdriver.
Turn the valve a quarter turn (90°) — this usually stops the water.
The valve is off when it is perpendicular to the pipe and on when it is parallel.
3. Check the water has stopped Turn the tap or appliance on briefly to make sure the leak has stopped. If water is still running, do not force the valve.
4. Contact GCH Repairs Even if the leak stops, it’s important to report the repair so it can be fixed properly.
