We are celebrating after Northgate Mansions was named Regional Winner (West of England) in the Best Small Social Housing Development category at the 2025 LABC Building Excellence Awards.
The prestigious awards celebrate high-quality building projects and the people behind them, recognising outstanding design, construction, and partnership work across the UK.
Delivered in partnership with Gloucester City Council and built by Aqua Construction, Northgate Mansions provides much-needed affordable housing in a prime location in Gloucester city centre with excellent transport links. With its distinctive cladding, the impressive five-storey building formed part of the £104 million landmark King’s Quarter development and the Gloucester city regeneration programme which also features the Forum building.
The modern, energy-efficient homes feature sustainable design elements including a green roof for improved drainage and bespoke cycle storage for residents.
Michael Hill, Executive Director of Customer Experience at GCH, said: “It’s a proud moment for everyone involved in delivering Northgate Mansions and a real honour to see the project recognised by LABC. Truly affordable housing like this transforms lives – improving health and education outcomes and helping people build stable futures. These homes show how social housing can combine sustainability, design quality and community benefit right at the heart of the city, whilst enhancing the wider King’s Quarter development.”
Jason Wasley, Managing Director of Aqua Construction, said: : “It was fantastic to work on such a key building central to the regeneration of the city. Our close relationship with the Gloucester Building Control Partnership, Gloucester City Homes, and other consultants and contractors were key to project progression and success.”
Northgate Mansions will now go forward to the national finals of the LABC Building Excellence Awards later this year.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards celebrate high-quality building projects and the people behind them. The awards recognize outstanding work across various categories, from new homes and social housing to public buildings and extensions, and are open to anyone involved in a construction project that has worked with a local authority building control team.
During the 22 months build programme, Aqua worked with 45 contractors employing over 380 workers, equating to 58,000 person-hours. Over 90% of workers were either local labour or local suppliers to the project from across Gloucestershire.
