HACT impact of a social home report

Impact of social housing research

We’re taking part in a national research project with HACT (Housing Association Charitable Trust), Shelter, and IKEA.

This vital research aims to shed light on the need for social housing by showing the impact of moving into a social home from the perspective of tenants.

Already, the findings of the interim report highlight the benefits of a safe, affordable home:

  • 44% of tenants noticed improvements in their physical health, and 61% said their mental health has improved.
  • 52% said they were better able to afford rent, and 62% felt more able to plan for the future
  • 59% no longer struggled to afford transport, and 35% said they can save better as a result of moving into their social rent home
  • 51% of tenants who were previously in debt have managed to clear it

The results of this research will help us build a clearer picture of how social housing changes lives, and to be part of the agenda for stronger, better-funded social housing.
