In the past five weeks we’ve attended four fires at GCH properties. Thankfully, everyone is safe. However, each incident caused disruption, damage and unexpected costs – and none of the households affected had home contents insurance.
These situations show how quickly fires can start in everyday situations, and how a few simple precautions can make a real difference. We’ve seen fires involving:
- Burning candles left unattended
- Items placed too close to heat sources
- Faulty electrical appliances
- Cooking equipment being accidentally activated
Start with these essential fire safety checks
Check your smoke and heat detectors are working
Blow candles out before leaving the room
Keep candles away from curtains and papers
Check electrical appliances and leads regularly
Avoid overloading plug sockets
Keep cooker tops clear of items

"We didn't think about home contents insurance. If you're in a fire you need it, otherwise you've got nothing and have to start again from scratch."
