Recycling helps to create more capacity within bins and benefits the environment.

It is important that waste and recycling are sorted correctly, to avoid cross-contamination.

Waste that is not sorted correctly will not be collected by the Council. Where our teams need to manually sort communal waste, it results in both delays and increased service charges.

Disposing of Large Items

  • It is illegal to dump rubbish, this is known as fly-tipping.
  • Bulky item collection can be arranged via the Council and is a chargeable service. Alternatively, you can take bulky items to a local Household Recycling Centre.
  • We do not provide a free bulky item removal service and will charge the block or persons found to have fly-tipped items. We work closely with the Environmental Crime Team to prosecute those who fly-tip.
  • If you book for a private company to remove your waste, always check they have a waste licence. As you will be held responsible if the waste is incorrectly disposed of.

Other important points

Gloucester City Council have rules when it comes to collecting waste and recycling from households. Below are some of the key points to be aware of:

  • Gloucester City Council operate a closed bin lid policy and will not collect bins that have their lids open.
  • To help manage your waste, ensure you recycle as much as possible.
  • Do not leave any waste at the side of the bins, as it will not be collected and if the waste causes an obstruction this will result in your bins not being emptied.
  • Large amounts of corrugated cardboard should be taken to a Recycling Centre.
  • Do not leave bulky items, such as mattresses and furniture etc in domestic waste bins or bin stores. The bins will not be emptied if there are any obstructions in the way, or if they contain unacceptable items.
  • Please ensure that your recycling is placed in the correct containers.
  • Recycling bins will not be emptied if they contain the wrong items or general waste.
