This Summer Gloucester City Homes (GCH) hosted its thirteenth Annual Garden Competition.
During June and July, tenants were welcomed to enter the competition which celebrates the hard work and effort that has been put into maintaining gardens across the City.
Entrants were asked to send in photos of their gardens and the photos were then posted online for a public vote hosted on Facebook. Over 250 votes were placed and there was a wide range of gardens entered to the competition including balcony gardens, floral gardens, vegetable gardens and more.
The winning entry was from Debra in Matson with a close runner up from Laura & Brian in Linden.
Debra’s garden received an impressive 67 votes and her grandson enjoys helping her out, she said: “I only moved here 2 years ago so have built up my garden, it attracts wildlife and bees. I won an award a few years back for the best small space and now I am so pleased to have won the competition.”
Laura and Brian’s garden received a very close 63 votes. The couple only moved into their new home back in May and have built a train ticket office for son Kayden who has learning difficulties. Laura commented: “We’re hoping it helps him really develop his life skills and confidence and we’re eventually hoping to add in more edible plants as he has already grown sunflowers, tomatoes and blueberrys. We love spending time together on the station even though we always have to make sure we have the right ticket!”
Jason Humphries, GCH’s Tenancy Services and ASB Manager added “A huge thank you to everyone who entered the competition, it is a great opportunity to showcase and share the beauty of many gardens to people across Gloucester. All of the entrants should be proud of their wonderful gardens.”
Highly Commended entries were received from Michelle Smith (Kingsholm), Mr & Mrs Hodson (Tuffley), Mr & Mrs Payne (Podsmead), Mr Obrien (Tuffley), Gillian Smoday (Hucclecote), Muqadas Sakhizada (Linden), Mr McKenzie (The Lampreys), Mrs Ferkin (The Lampreys), Lisa Jones (Chequers), Denise Steven Summers (White City) and Sue Coole (Matson).
