Weekly rent is charged every Monday, a rent account will be in arrears if a payment has not been received within the week in which it falls due.

Rent should be paid in advance of the payment cycle that you choose, however we appreciate that this may seem like a big step if you have not paid in this way before.

All tenants agree to payments in advance when signing our tenancy agreement.

Paying in advance has many benefits:

· If you move on to Universal Credit you will have to wait 5 weeks for your housing costs to be paid therefore if you are in advance this will assist you in managing your rent account to stay up to date.

 If you decide to leave your property you need to give 4 weeks’ notice to terminate your tenancy and you remain liable for rent during this period, if you are in advance you can use this credit up and save payments during an expensive time – also leave your tenancy with peace of mind that you don’t owe us any money. (Remember that you might not be able to apply for other social housing if you leave your GCH tenancy in debt.)

· If you have an unexpected bill and you are in advance it could give you breathing space knowing your rent is paid.

Utility Costs 

Utility bills are as important as paying your rent. Without them you cannot heat your home, prepare and cook meals or drink a glass of water, all of which you cannot do without a roof over your head.  

Gas and electricity prices are rising and it can be increasingly difficult to manage the cost of this.  

Here are some handy tips to help you keep costs down:

  • Keeping your property at a comfortable constant temperature requires less energy than putting the heating on periodically. If you have a thermostat, try setting it between 18 -20° and turning it up when you need it.  
  • Switching plug sockets off at the wall not only reduces risk but cost as well. Cut off the supply and avoid leaving things on standby.  
  • Thick curtains will help reduce the loss of heat through windows and doors.  
  • Ventilation is key to preventing damp which can ultimately make a property much colder. Make sure trickle vents are open at all times. 
  • Dry wet washing in a well-ventilated area and avoid drying it on radiators 
  • Microwave ovens, cookers, radios- so many household items have clocks on them which require energy to run. Switch them off at the wall and save yourself ££’s each year.  
  • Get organised and make a note of when your current tariff runs out. Lots of providers offer discounts for new customers, but also staying loyal. Give your supplier a ring and find out what they can offer. 
  • Switching your supplier each year can save ££’s – the process is easy to complete and all you need to do is provide a meter reading to each provider. 
  • Smart meters can be a great way to see how much you are spending and in real time too – they are provided for free, just contact your current energy supplier to arrange installation.
