Residents of Podsmead can now benefit from the food deliveries by joining ‘The Butterfly Network’ where it costs just £2 to become a member. Each member is given a cool bag which allows them to collect food each week. The majority of the food is then given away for free with a small fee for meat products. Within the first week, the scheme has proved popular with 20 residents joining.
Les Jevins, Community Development & Engagement Lead at Podsmead Big Local comments: “This will make a real difference to the local community, allowing the storage of chilled and fresh foods for distribution to residents and those who have a low income. Partnership working between Podsmead Big Local and Gloucester City Homes really does make a positive difference to the Podsmead Community.”
Mandi Holt, Community Investment Team Leader at GCH adds; “We are pleased to help local partners who support residents in our communities. The fridge allows the Fare Share food delivery to be stored for longer which benefits those who are in need of healthy food and brings less waste.”
For more information about joining the scheme please pop into the Podsmead Big Local or contact them on 01452 415223.
Each Wednesday local residents can also drop into the Podsmead Big Local to collect bread and pastries donated by a range of local businesses through GL Communities.
